Y5L CAS Presentations Recap

ree

Last Wednesday, the Year 5 students shared with their classmates their CAS experiences. When the school year began, the students were divided into different clubs, where they had to come up with an original project related to the area they had chosen. Ever since then, they have been developing their ideas and working to get amazing results. Here are the great projects they presented!

The first club that presented was the Music group. Over the last weeks, they composed and recorded an educational song for children. With the collaborative effort of each member, they made a beautiful song that creatively taught the colors. Since everyone had unique skills, they divided the roles accordingly. Therefore, everybody could use their talent in the area they were most comfortable in. While some played instruments, others sang or wrote the lyrics.

The members of the Sports Club also showed the project they developed during this time. Their idea was to host a running competition in small teams, in which every team represented an institution. Each student had to run as many kilometers as possible and their results were added to their team’s score. In the end, the team that had collectively run the most donated to the institution they represented. Although this differed from their original plan, which needed to be changed because of the pandemic, the students found a great way of achieving their goals from a distance.

Following the Sports Club, the students in Meditation presented their experience. This club aimed to study meditation, including its history and different techniques, then applying it in real life. As they learned more about this topic, they took time to put their knowledge into practice. The club became a space where the students could meditate, taking a break from the stress of the school day. Not only did this practice boost their mental state, but their physical health also improved.

Another club in which the students worked was the Cooking Club. Although the group faced many challenges operating remotely, their perseverance and creativity led them to make an incredible project. To respect the COVID restrictions, the students created recipe books and donated them to the masculine and feminine Cottolengo. Inside these books, they included various recipes and activities for the men and women to carry out. After they finished booking them together, they took the recipes to the institutions, along with multiple recipe videos.

Furthermore, the Knitting Club did a wonderful project to help the community. Together, they knit blankets and a sweater, donating them to a local institution. The members of this club had different levels of experience in knitting. However, that was not a problem for them. Whenever someone needed help, other students would come to their aid, making sure no one was left behind. Additionally, they all shared their knowledge and techniques, so they could try several knitting styles.

EcoArt was also an option for students to choose as their CAS project. Creating recycled products, the objective of this club was to reduce pollution while raising awareness of the human’s impact on the environment. The members of the club were divided into subgroups and each created its product. Within the wide variety of projects, some examples are a vertical garden, games with recycled materials, and informative videos. The highlight of this club is that the members could add their twist to recycling, making every idea unique.

Finally, the Academic Club showed its presentation. Although the members shared the common goal of educating the school community, the projects of the subgroups were completely different approaches to the club. Some ideas included designing informative posters and bookmarks, finding fun ways of teaching and learning, and the Newspaper Club. The idea for Hobson News originated as a CAS project from the Academic Club, even though it has now turned into a separate activity open for all. This proves how, with creativity, many projects can be created from a basic idea.

Now that the presentations are over, the students are expected to move on to another club. After spending the last months working on a project, they will start a new one wherever they choose to go next. Therefore, the students will develop multiple skills and face distinct challenges throughout the year. Once they finish the IB Program, the CAS experiences will hopefully have made them grow as individuals.
