As many of our students may already know, the 4YL students take a subject called Global Perspectives, in which one of the requirements is to organize and complete a project in relation to a current issue of global importance.
This year, a group of students started a Winter Campaign as their project. The aim of their proposal is to collect winter necessitates and donate them to low-income communities, helping them stay warm during the cold weather. Anyone who is interested in the campaign can do so until Friday 13th by dropping off the donations inside boxes at the school’s entrance.
The campaign is an excellent demonstration of the student’s active engagement with the community and their desire to help. Therefore, we decided to interview Justina Arregui, one of the organizers, and ask her about the meaning behind the project.
What inspired you to start the Winter Campaign?
“What inspired us to make this Winter Campaign was our Global Perspectives project, in which we had to choose an issue. Our issue is poverty and inequality so we started to discuss what we could do about it. We were also inspired by the winter. We thought about the winter and the cold and how low-income neighborhoods are affected.”
How did you come up with the project?
“We came up with the project because in our Global Perspectives subject we had to do a team project, analyzing an issue and making an outcome.”
What was the biggest challenge you faced when organizing the campaign?
“Our biggest challenge was to spread out the voice to the school. We went to all the classes to tell the students about our campaign, so they can donate us clothes and blankets.”
What impact do you think the campaign will have?
“We think that it will have a positive impact because we are helping people that really need our help. They will have a happier and hotter winter!”
