Hobson News' Predecessor: The Perficean Society

An Extract from "The Perficean"

Many years ago in The British Schools, The Perficean Society was created to cultivate the English language. It was founded in 1940 and was active for many years. It received its name from the School motto, “Perfice”, which means “do thoroughly” or “be perfect”.

The Society was opened for all students in the Senior School, but only 20 members were allowed at the same time. To become a candidate for membership, it was necessary to attend and take an active part in three consecutive meetings as a probation member. The last requirement for admission was being elected by two-thirds of the full members.

The Perficean Society aimed to help its associates enlarge their knowledge of English and its culture in an instructive and entertaining way. To achieve this, they performed a wide range of tasks. The main ones were: debates, play-reading, and talks that could be prepared or spontaneous. Other projects included “hat” meetings, which comprised two-minute discussions on subjects drawn at random, quizzes, and musical evenings.

In later years, the nature of its sessions changed. While the academic aspects were still present, other types of projects were incorporated. For example, to complete its aim of serving the school, it undertook the task of helping the Senior Librarian manage the A. J. Hobson library.

For a long time, students could be part of the Perficean Society, reinforcing their use of the English language while participating in enriching activities. Their fascinating debates divided opinions and sparked up conversations about disputed topics. The members deeply enjoyed the activities of the Society and its meetings were cherished by all of them.
