Ever since Uruguay first joined the Olympic Games in 1924, it has won ten Olympic medals. These include two gold in soccer, one silver in cycling and one in rowing, and six bronze (two in basketball, one in boxing, and three in rowing).
In the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games, the country’s delegation will comprise eleven athletes who will compete in various disciplines. Uruguay will be represented in athletics, judo, swimming, rowing, and sailing. This year, the country continues its search for another medal, which it has not gained for 21 years.
With only eleven members, this is the third smallest delegation in Uruguayan history. Before, it stood in Los Angeles in 1932 with only one athlete and Montreal in 1979 with nine attendees. However, the delegation positively stands out in other aspects. Uruguay has an important presence of female athletes and continues to represent women in international competitions. In this year’s team, five of the eleven members are women.

The delegation will fly to Japan to attend the beginning of the competition on Friday 23rd. The opening ceremony will welcome all athletes at the Olympic Stadium to commemorate the start of the Games. Then, every delegation will compete in different disciplines until the event ends on August 8th.
Among the Uruguayan athletes who will compete this year is Emiliano Lasa. After obtaining an Olympic diploma in the long jump for placing sixth, he will once again compete in the same category. Déborah Rodríguez and María Pía Fernandez will also take part in the athletics competition, running 800 meters and 1.500 meters, respectively.

Representing the Double Pair Lightweight Rowing category, Bruno Certaro and Felipe Klüver will team up for the Games. As it is the category in which Uruguay has won the most medals, the pair has an enormous responsibility to make the country proud.
In the other categories, Dolores Moreira, Knupell, and Pablo Defazi will compete in sailing while Mikael Aprahamian takes part in judo. Finally, Enzo Martínez and Nicola Frank will represent Uruguay as swimmers.
