Last Sunday, April 25th, the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony took place, and they differed greatly from what we have experienced in previous years. Due to the unusual circumstances we are living in, big changes needed to be made to comply with the COVID restrictions.
The ceremony was held almost two months later than usual, and the event was split between two locations: the Dolby Theater in Hollywood and Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. The red carpet was shorter than normal and all after-parties were canceled. It was also the least-viewed Academy Awards Ceremony in history with 10.4 million viewers.
2020 was a special year, and the film industry suffered the consequences. Most of the films were released while movie theaters were closed because of the pandemic, and many film productions were interrupted. Therefore, the Academy extended the qualification period for films to February 28th of this year.
Despite all the challenges that had to be faced, history was made on Sunday’s event. Chloé Zhao, who directed “Nomadland”, became the first woman of color to win Best Director, and the second woman to ever win. Additionally, Yuh-Jung Youn won Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her acting in “Minari”, making her the first Korean actress to ever win an Oscar. Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson were the first black stylists to win Best Makeup and Hairstyling after participating in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”.
Other highlights of the night included Daniel Kaluuya, who won the Best Supporting Actor award for his work in “Judas and the Black Messiah”. “Nomadland” took the spotlight by winning three of the six prizes it was nominated for, one of which was Best Picture. Surprisingly, Anthony Hopkins won for best actor over the much favored Chadwick Boseman, making him the oldest person to receive an acting Oscar at age 83.
Although the Oscars differed from what we expected, it was a great opportunity to celebrate the amazing films of last year. Everyone involved in the making of these projects deserves recognition after battling the many adversities 2020 presented. This year, we look forward to seeing new films and, hopefully, we can watch them all together on the big screen.
