The 73rd Emmy Awards: Who Took Home the Win

Two weeks ago, on Sunday 19th of September, the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards took place in the Microsoft Theatre, located in Los Angeles, United States. The event was hosted for the first time by Cedric the Entertainer. In addition, to conform to the COVID-19 guidelines, the awards had a limited audience of nominees and other guests.

This was a huge contrast from last year when their previous host, comedian Jimmy Kimmel, had to present the Emmys to no audience and the winners gave their speeches from home or in separate rooms.

Moreover, The Crown and The Queen’s Gambit were the series with the most wins of the night, with eleven awards each. The monarchy-inspired show received the Outstanding Cast for a Drama Series award while the other took home the same honour but for a Limited Anthology Series or Movie.

Other notable triumphs included seven Emmys obtained by Ted Lasso, four wins for Pose, and three awards earned by WandaVision.

Furthermore, the show experienced some backlash after all the acting winners were white, and it had also, apparently, not gone through with its promise of making the event outdoors since Seth Rogen pointed out the lack of protocols.

Even though the Emmys were not perfect, there are several moments worth remembering, such as Michaela Coel’s beautiful speech after accepting the Best Writing in a Television Limited Series or Movie for I May Destroy You, and Kate Winslet’s second Outstanding Lead Actress for Mare of Easttown.
