Seen the movie “Sound Of Metal”? Here are some fun facts behind the making of the film.

The Oscar-nominated film “Sound of Metal” deals with Ruben, a drummer who begins to lose his hearing and has to come to terms with a future filled with silence. It has received lots of positive critics as well as many awards and nominations. There was a lot of work behind the scenes of the movie, and there are many interesting facts involving the making of it.

First of all, the actor that brings to life the main character, Riz Ahmed, spent five days a week for seven months learning American Sign Language in order to prepare for his role. His ASL coach, Jeremy Lee Stone, taught him all he knows, and, in the process, they became great friends, creating an irreplaceable bond.

Additionally, Jeremy Lee Stone also plays a minor role in the film as an ASL teacher, as well as being the creative assistant during the production of the movie.

Another skill Riz Ahmed had to learn to portray his character was playing the drums. He learned how to play this instrument in seven months, which was definitely a challenge, especially since whenever he played on screen he was doing it for real. In one scene, which shows the character perform, the actors were presenting in front of a live audience in a real nightclub. This experience led Ahmed to bond with his co-star Olivia Cooke over the fear of playing like a real band.

Moreover, Ahmed wore, in some scenes, auditory blockers deep inside his ear canal that emitted white noise, with the purpose of getting closer to understanding what it feels like to be deaf. Similarly, scriptwriter Abraham Marder went inside an anechoic chamber, which is a room designed to absorb all sound, so they could experience what it's like to not hear anything.
