MTV Awards: Here's What You Need to Know

On May 16 and 17, the 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards took place in the Hollywood Palladium. The 29th edition of the awards was the first time the ceremony was celebrated in two days and the fourth to honor both movies and television. Leslie Jones presented the awards on Sunday, accompanied by Snoop Dogg serving as the DJ. The following day, Nikki Glaser hosted MTV Movie & TV Awards: Unscripted, for awards going to reality television shows.

The successful mini-series WandaVision was the big winner of the night, collecting four awards including the coveted Best Show. Elizabeth Olsen won Best Performance in Show for portraying Wanda and Kathryn Hahn scored the Best Villain award for playing Agatha. The fourth award WandaVision received was for Best Fight, which Olsen and Hahn shared for their performance. “Marvel fans, you guys are just the greatest fans anyone can have and I’ve loved playing this part for seven years,” Olsen said on stage while collecting her golden popcorn.

Similarly, Scarlett Johansson was another star of the ceremony, taking home the Generation Award for her many roles, including the upcoming “Black Widow”. Johansson also received a lot of attention after being covered in slime by her husband while remotely accepting the award.

Sacha Baron Cohen was honored with the Comedic Genius Award, which several of his most iconic characters accepted on his behalf. During his acceptance speech, he introduced some of his best-known roles, starting with Kazakhstani journalist Borat, before being interrupted by Ali G.

The second night, dedicated to unscripted TV, featured the win of the Jersey Shore Family Vacation for Best Docu-Reality Show and the Reality Royalty Lifetime Achievement. RuPaul’s Drag Race was another important winner, as the reality competition received Best Reality Cast, Best Competition Series, and RuPaul for Best Host.
