The annual Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit, better known as the Met Gala, took place this Monday. Usually, the ball is held on the first Monday of May but, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it had to be postponed for a few months.
The 2021 Met Gala raised an incredible amount of $16.75 million dollars, dethroning its previous record from 2019 of approximately $15 million dollars.
This year’s event was co-hosted by none other than Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet, singer Billie Eilish, poet Amanda Gorman, and tennis player Naomi Osaka. The chosen theme was In America: A Lexicon of Fashion that aims to celebrate American Independence and how designers have responded to recent social and political events.
Countless A-list celebrities were present with iconic outfits, such as Lil Nas X, Kendall Jenner, Megan Fox, Kaia Gerber, Olivia Rodrigo, Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, Lorde, and many more. What happens inside the gala is kept a secret with a no-phone policy, but it normally features a performer, an exploration of the gallery, and a mouth-watering dinner.
Although there were many new attendees and faces we’ve already grown accustomed to, there also were a huge number of stars who were not able to make it. The no-show list includes Zendaya, Lady Gaga, Kylie Jenner, Madonna, Harry Styles, Katy Perry, and Blake Lively, who have all attended before with astonishing ensembles.
In America: An Anthology of Fashion is the theme of the 2022 Met Gala and will be considered the second part of this week’s ball.
