Mary, Queen of Scots’s golden rosary has been stolen from Arundel Castle in England. This artifact was held by Mary at her execution in 1587, making it an irreplaceable object of British history. Police say the rosary was taken in a recent raid along with many other precious pieces.
On Monday 24, the Sussex Police asked the public for help in a press release. The thieves managed to steal £1 million worth of gold and silver items, all of them which were stolen from a display cabinet in the castle.
According to the police, they arrived at the scene minutes after the alarm went off at 10:30 p.m. However, they did not make it in time to prevent the thieves from smashing the display case and escaping with the items. Among these great historical objects, was the gold rosary used by Mary Queen of Scots and the coronation cups gifted by the queen to Earl Marshall. Other treasures were taken but these have not been specified by the police.
Arundel Castle designated a spokesperson who commented on the event. The representative said that the items have “significant monetary value,” but, most importantly, they have “immeasurably greater and priceless historical importance.” The spokesperson also urged anyone with information to contact the police and contribute to the return of the treasures.
Although not much is known about the raid, the police are doing everything they can to recover the pieces. At the moment, they are investigating a deserted vehicle discovered close to the castle, to see if it is related to the crime.
The golden rosary, part of a $1.7M dollar raid of Arundel Castle, belonged to Mary, Queen of Scots
