After being postponed last year due to the pandemic, Eurovision returned for its 65th edition. The Grand Final of Eurovision Song Contest 2021 took place in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, where a new winner was decided.
On Saturday 22, we saw the final stage of this competition with the participation of 26 performing acts. The hosts were Edsilia Rombley, Chantal Janzen, Jan Smit, and Nikkie de Jager, who had already filled this role several times before. Legendary Eurovision winners were also featured in the event, as they participated in the interval act “Rock the Roof” project.
The winner of this year's Eurovision Song Contest was Måneskin, which represented Italy, followed by France and Switzerland. They earned the first spot with a score of 524 points in their performance, “Zitti e buoni”. Still, this was no ordinary victory and it surely caused a lot of excitement and intrigue in the audience. After the national juries voted, Italy was placed in fourth place and Switzerland in the lead. However, the public vote sent them straight to first position and guaranteed their victory.
Måneskin is a critically acclaimed band, composed of vocalist Damiano, bassist Victoria, guitarist Thomas, and Ethan on drums. As a tribute to Victoria’s home country, their unique name came from the Danish word for “moonlight”.
Once the band’s victory was announced, singer Damiano David shouted into the microphone “We just wanted to say to the whole of Europe, to the whole world, rock and roll never dies.” Their performance will definitely be remembered as they lit up the stage with their punk-funk rock sung in Italian.
Another interesting moment of the event was UK’s entry, Embers, sung by James Newman. The act did not receive a single point, leading it to finish last. In fact, it made history becoming the first Eurovision act to receive a score of 0 after all 39 juries cast their points. Nevertheless, James Newman managed to keep a positive attitude and smile through it.
Italy's Måneskin took home the crown this time, with a total of 524 points for their performance of "Zitti e buoni"
