COP26: Glasgow Climate Conference

Before the conference, several nations announced intentions to decrease emissions, but there has been a frenzy of additional announcements:

Trees: Over a hundred international leaders pledged to combat deforestation, which is critical since trees can absorb massive amounts of CO2. Similar projects have existed in the past, but this one is better financed.

Methane: More than a hundred nations have signed on to a plan to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030. China, Russia, and India, three of the world's largest polluters, have not signed.

Coal: More than 40 nations have pledged to reduce their reliance on coal, which is the single most significant contributor to climate change. Australia, India, China, and the United States, among the world's most coal-dependent countries, have yet to sign on.

Money: 450 organizations with a combined $130 trillion in assets (about 40% of global private assets) pledged to support "clean" technology like renewable energy.

There are only a few days remaining till the summit. Before the end of COP26, more agreements and amendments to the Paris Climate Accord are conceivable.

On Monday, former US President Barack Obama presented at COP26 in Glasgow. When the Paris Climate Accord was launched in 2015 at COP21, Obama was in office. His message was intended for younger generations, urging them to "remain outraged" and recognize that "time is running out" to effect change.

It's worth mentioning that nearly 100,000 people marched through Glasgow's streets on Friday, asking that their constituents take greater action at COP26.
