Coldplay, a well renowned British rock band, stumbled upon the question: Why tour at all? Due to the environmental externalities caused by touring, the band decided to elaborate an eco-friendly touring scheme.
However, Coldplay not only wants to tour sustainably but also benefit the environment in the process. The band proposes a 50% reduction in carbon emissions, as well as fund nature and tech projects with the ticket revenue.
Chris Martin, Coldplay’s lead singer, stated that the venues at every concert will be powered by the fans thanks to new technology. By jumping up and down, the dance floor will generate electricity to power the whole event. In addition, no single-use plastic will be offered at the concerts.
Nevertheless, there is pollution in places where it's inevitable, such as flying, and although Coldplay does admit to this, they plan to offset these CO2 emissions by planting one tree for every ticket sold.
Martin acknowledged that some of their actions, such as continuing to fly on private aircraft, would draw criticism.
He responded, "I don't mind any backlash at all." "We're trying our best, and we're not quite there yet."
"And the folks who criticize us for doing something like that, for flying, they're correct. So we don't have anything to say against it."
The band will begin touring in March of 2022, performing their first concert in Costa Rica. The performances will be powered by batteries charged by fans, as well as solar energy, recycled cooking oil from local eateries, and 100% renewable mains power when accessible, such as in Costa Rica.
