This series' intent is to show the many flaws of the justice system and how it always fails people of color. It shows the discrimination brown and black people face and how they are always considered guilty just because of the color of their skin. Aside from it discussing a very important topic, the acting and cinematography are stunning which all rounds up to be an incredible TV show that you most certainly can’t miss.

The Hate U Give (book)

This book follows Starr Carter, a sixteen-year-old who lives in completely different worlds, her poor neighborhood, and her fancy private high school. One day, Starr witnesses the death of her childhood best friend Khali at the hands of a police officer even though he was unarmed. After this happened, it became popular news. Some people thought the police had a fair reason to shoot him while others were protesting in the streets because of the injustice committed. However, everyone wanted to know exactly what happened that night, and Starr is the only one who can answer.

This book is an eyeopener for everyone who isn’t black and doesn’t have to fear for their lives every time they come near a police officer. It teaches you about the current systemic racism including the broken criminal justice system in America. It has a very important message so you should definitely read this heartbreaking but powerful story.

The Book Thief (book)

The Book Thief is a historical novel written by Markus Zusak in 2005. Set in 1939 in Nazi Germany, this heart-wrenching novel tells the story of Liesel, a young girl whose life is changed after she picks up a book buried by her brother’s graveside. Liesel falls in love with books and words and, with the help of his new foster father, learns to read. Soon, that first act of thievery becomes a habit as she steals more books from wherever she can find them. But these are dangerous times. When Liesel’s foster family hides a Jew in their basement, her world is turned upside down.

The most interesting aspect of this story is its narrator. “The Book Thief” is told by Death, a fascinating and unique character who the reader grows to appreciate and respect. This gives an odd but special perspective to the story, as Death’s comments are often philosophical and beautiful.

With beautifully crafted writing that moves the heart, Zusak has created one of the greatest stories of our time. This eye-opening novel reveals how there are two sides to every story by dealing with how people in Germany were affected by the war. It will also inspire readers to think about human nature and why some people risk their lives to do what they know is right. We highly recommend this touching story that, once you read it, you are destined to fall in love with.

This is a very lighthearted and enjoyable series that also deals with mature and important topics such as abuse, bullying, and racism among others. All the characters have depth so it makes for a very entertaining watch.
