The Color Purple (Book)

This book documents the lives and traumas of African American teenagers in the early twentieth century in rural Georgia. Celie narrates her life through painfully honest letters to god and to her sister Nettie from which she was separated at birth because her father beats and rapes her. She and her sister go through literal hell because of this man’s repulsive actions against them, but they are brave and they pull through.
This book deals with very important topics like sexual abuse, domestic violence, and racism. The story is compassionate and beautifully imagined. And it’s hard to read at times, but it is also a journey towards redemption and love and it’s hopeful.
Circe (Book)

This book follows Circe, the strange daughter of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans during the Greek Heroic Age. And she is strange because she isn’t powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother, she has the power of witchcraft with which she can transform rivals into monsters and threaten the gods themselves. Because of this Zeus banishes her to a deserted island where she keeps practicing her witchcraft, bonds with beasts and meets some of the most famous figures in all of mythology. But a woman on her own has to protect herself from men and gods so she must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods or the mortals.
This modern adaptation from various greek myths is amazing, it has good characters, it is fast-paced (which will guarantee you won’t get bored). It is beautifully written from Circe's perspective which makes it really original and it has a little bit of a feminist twist, so definitely go read it. Like right now!
Luca (movie)

This movie follows Luca, a sea monster that by following a stranger realizes he can become human if he’s dry. This discovery leads to the start of an amazing summer in Portorosso a little town on the Italian Riviera. He and the stranger Alberto find Gulilia there and together they plan on winning the Portorosso Cup raise to get enough money to buy a scooter and leave their sea life behind together. T5he only problem is, Luca and Alberto are sea monsters and this town happens to be a big fan of hunting them.
This movie was so wholesome. It is a movie completely about friendship and taking your life into your own hands and making choices for yourselves and not for others. It is about finding your people and doing what you love. It is also about being different and learning that you don’t need to fit in to find people that will like you just the way you are. Besides the animation is fantastic, it is so beautiful and the setting made you feel like you were there. Also, the addition of Italian words and different elements of Italy made for a very refreshing movie that can teach and interest kids in their culture.
Cruella (Movie)

Estella is a young and clever girl who's determined to make a name for herself in the fashion world. She soon meets a pair of thieves after her mother dies and is left for an orphan and together they build a life for themselves on the streets of London. However, when Estella starts working for the fashion legend Baroness von Hellman, she realizes some hard truths that lead her to embrace her wicked side to become the vengeful Cruella.
This movie is simply outstanding, it has an amazing soundtrack, beautiful costume design, and of course the iconic and classical Disney character Cruella De Vil. This movie is more of a backstory so you get to see her life before becoming the great villain she is and what led her to this change from Estella to Cruella.
Sweet tooth (Series)

This series is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a virus created hybrid humans with animal features. We follow Gus, a sweet and courageous young boy with deer features that lives in the woods with his father where he learns medical care and religious prophecy among other things. Despite loving his father, he wants to escape and search for a new beginning and possibly find his mother.
This series is really good, it has cute characters, and the story is amazing. It is really well made and the cinematography is *chef's kiss*, with the warm tones, it brings all the vibes. The relationships between the characters are so wholesome and heartfelt. If you watch it, you’re guaranteed to grin like an idiot.
Atypical (Series)

This series is a heartfelt comedy that follows Sam, a teenager with autism, and his life in high school. As he becomes more independent his whole family also goes through a life-changing journey, his father learns to understand his son, his mother learns to take care of herself after spending all her life taking care of her kid, and we see the cute sibling dynamic with his sister Casey.
It is a very Good story with incredibly well-developed characters with representation from the LGBTQ+ community and the autistic spectrum with the problems that being part of these may cause. It also has amazing side plots for secondary characters like the best friend that wants to be a nurse. It shows real family dynamics and Casey and Sam's relationship is super wholesome.
